Mireio, A Tribute to Frédéric Mistral
Mireio is the title of an iconic work by Frédéric Mistral, a poet from Provence. Published in 1859, this epic poem tells the tragic story of Mireille, a young girl in love with a humble boatman, against her parents’ wishes. This masterpiece, written in the Provençal language, earned Mistral the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904 and helped spread Provençal culture far beyond the region’s borders.
By giving this name to the bastide, I wanted to pay tribute to this literary and cultural heritage, which remains a source of pride for the people of the Alpilles today.
Paul Ricard and His Love for Provence
While Mireio evokes Mistral, its connection to Paul Ricard is no coincidence. A visionary entrepreneur and passionate lover of Provence, Paul Ricard was deeply committed to promoting the culture and traditions of his native land. Creator of the famous pastis that bears his name, he was also a staunch defender of the Provençal language and a patron of regional heritage.
In the 1950s, Paul Ricard played a key role in introducing Mistral to the general public by supporting cultural initiatives and naming some of his properties in reference to the poet’s work. His private island off the coast of Bandol, the Île de Bendor, is a striking example of his love for Provençal art and tradition.
